Artisan perfume in Montréal: a guide

Montréal has a strange amount of perfume for a city its size. Small ateliers, perfumer-founders, bottles filled a few hundred at a time, and enough people who want something composed rather than manufactured to keep all of it alive. Nobody planned this. It just kept happening.

We are one of those houses, so read this guide knowing where it comes from. But an honest map of the scene has to name the neighbours. The scene is the reason any of us exist, and the best way to learn your own taste is to smell widely before you commit to anything.

What artisan means when it is not marketing

Any brand can print small batch on a box. The useful test is simpler: does a specific person compose the perfume, and do human hands fill the bottle? At artisan scale, the person who signed the formula also smells the batch before it ships. Formulas are allowed to be strange, or quiet, or dosed far beyond what a mall brand's margins would permit, because there is no committee to please. You are paying for perfume, not a licensing deal.

The Montréal houses worth knowing

These are ateliers we respect and gladly send people to when our line is not what they are looking for.

Lvnea works at the natural and botanical end of perfumery, with a boutique in Mile End. If you want compositions built around plant materials and dark, unusual accords, start there.

Monsillage is the studio of Isabelle Michaud, a Paris-trained perfumer who won an Art and Olfaction Award in 2015 for making celery smell like a chypre. Her work is precise and quietly original; it rewards a second and third wearing.

Les Vides Anges makes small-batch fragrance and writes generously about the local scene; their enthusiasm for Montréal perfumery is contagious.

The list does not end there. Ruby Brown, LESCENTO and a rotating cast of newer projects surface at the city's markets and design fairs every year. Follow any thread and you will find another.

Where to smell them in person

Perfume does not survive translation to a screen, and it barely survives a paper blotter. Lvnea runs its own boutique. Several houses sell through markets and design fairs, especially toward the holidays. We keep a counter at Royalmount and pop-ups around the city; the current list is on our stores page. Wherever you go, spray on skin and then leave. The scent you still want three hours later is the answer.

How to choose an artisan perfume

Buy samples first. Nearly every serious house here sells a discovery format, because we all know what a blind full-bottle purchase usually produces. Ours is the Discovery Set: seven scents in 3 mL vials for $39, with $30 back on your next order of $100 or more. Wear one scent per day for a week. Skin, weather and mood change everything, and a fragrance that shouts on a blotter can turn gentle by evening.

Our corner of the scene

Maison Carthia is the Mediterranean corner of Montréal perfumery. Every scent begins with our master perfumer on Djerba, an island off the Tunisian coast, and comes home to Westmount to be blended, filled and sealed by hand. We only make extrait de parfum, dosed around 25 to 30% fragrance oil, which is why a Carthia scent lasts 6 to 12 hours on most skin. Questions we hear

What is the difference between artisan and niche perfume?

Niche describes distribution: a fragrance sold outside mass retail, sometimes by very large companies. Artisan describes production: a named perfumer, small batches, hands on bottles. Most artisan houses are niche. Very few niche brands are artisan.

Is artisan perfume worth the price?

Count wears, not millilitres. An extrait dosed near 30% needs two sprays and lasts most of a day, so a 50 mL bottle covers months of daily wear. A cheap perfume you re-apply three times a day is rarely the bargain it looks like.

Where should a beginner start?
